What is the Foster Grandparent Program?

Photo of Foster Grandparent reading to a child. The Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors age 60 or older opportunities to serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers for children and youth with special needs. They provide 20 hours of weekly service to community organizations such as schools, youth centers, day care centers, pre-schools, and Head Start programs.

Who can be a Foster Grandparent?

Foster Grandparents must meet income eligibility requirements and be at least 60 years of age. They must participate in pre-service orientation and in training workshops throughout their service.

How does FGP benefit Henry, Hancock and Rush counties?

Foster Grandparents offer emotional support to children who have been abused and neglected, mentor troubled teenagers and children with physical disabilities. In the process, they strengthen the community by providing youth services that community budgets cannot afford by building bridges across generations.

How does FGP operate locally?

Interlocal CAP receives a grant to sponsor and operate FGP projects serving Henry, Hancock and Rush counties.

What organizations are eligible for FGP assistance?

Most non-profit, child- and youth-oriented organizations are eligible to serve as FGP volunteer stations.

What benefits do Foster Grandparents receive?

Foster Grandparents receive a tax-free stipend, transportation, meals during service, annual physical examinations, and accident and liability insurance while on duty.

In addition to these benefits, the program gives participants the opportunity to share a lifetime of experience with youth.
