You may be able to get free legal help from ILS

Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation and advice to low income people.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for free legal help from ILS you must be within their income and resource guidelines.

How to apply for help

To get help from ILS, you must apply by calling or going to one of the ILS offices during the intake hours. If you reside in Henry county and are interested in applying for our services you can call the ICAP office at 765-529-4403 for an intake appointment. If you have an emergency, call 1-800-869-0212 right away. The intake worker will ask you about your income, household size and legal problem. This information is confidential. ILS will contact you within a few days after you apply and tell you whether we can represent you. The toll-free hotline number for intake is 1-877-323-6260. Hours for this number are Monday & Wednesday 10:00 a.m. - 12:00; Tuesday 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and Thursday 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Types of cases ILS accepts

ILS provides legal advice and legal representation to individual clients in non criminal cases. ILS represents clients in administrative hearings as well as in-state and federal trial and appellate courts. ILS does not have resources to represent every applicant, therefore we often give advice to clients to help them resolve problems on their own.

We help people in civil cases, including:

HOUSING, such as eviction, foreclosure and landlord/tenant disputes
PUBLIC BENEFITS, such as food stamps, SSI, unemployment, poor relief and TANF
HEALTH, including Medicaid or Medicare
DIVORCE or CHILD CUSTODY cases where there is child abuse or spouse abuse
CHILD IN NEED OF SERVICES (CHINS)
CONSUMER, such as collections or repossessions
EDUCATION, including expulsion and access to special education services and Vocational Rehabilitation
EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT, including access to child care and transportation when needed for employment
ASSESS TO JUSTICE, such as the denial of a court-appointed attorney in certain civil cases

To use our resources to provide poor persons with a variety of aggressive, quality legal services which will help them to gain equal access to the courts, legislative bodies and government agencies; empower them to control their lives; and impact on the major causes and effects of poverty.
