Substance Abuse Prevention Programs

ICAP became the fiscal agent for ARIES (Abuse Reduction Intervention Education & Support) and the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program in 2005.

Programs

Too Good For Drugs

Life-enriching skills are at the heart of Too Good for Drugs, an award winning program designed to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors related to the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Whether children face peer pressure or their own curiosity, Too Good for Drugs helps students develop skills essential to making good decisions. The Too Good for Drugs program is a science-based, field-tested curriculum that generates short and long-term positive results. This program is offered to all Henry County 2nd and 3rd graders.

VOICE of Henry County Youth Council

VOICE is a youth movement dedicated to educating their peers on the dangers of substance abuse. There is a VOICE group in each of the five school corporations in Henry County. Every other month, members meet in their individual schools to work on posters, displays and other ways to promote anti-substance abuse efforts. Every other month, representatives from each grade level from 8th to 12th, meet to exchange ideas with the other schools and work on special projects, watch videos or listen to speakers.

Red Ribbon Week

One week in October, we promote “Red Ribbon Week” in memory of
Enrique Camarena, a DEA agent who was killed by a major drug cartel. We contact area businesses to ask them to donate items such as a free drink or dessert for students who wear their red ribbons into their place of business. Last year we had 14 businesses, and 5068 students who participated. We gave out over 10,000 free items to students who pledged to be “drug-free”.

D.A.R.E

We give funding to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department for the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The program takes place in all 5th grades in the county. It is a 12 week core course (some add 4 weeks).
Some county schools offer a 5 hour version to 3rd or 4th grades, this varies with schools. In New Castle schools, some other grades are covered as well.
D.A.R.E. teaches kids how to recognize and resist the direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs. And since between 70% and 90% of all crime is drug related, it is absolutely vital that we reach the children of America before it is too late.

Smoking Cessation Counseling and Support

ICAP offers a free smoking cessation course. The class meets each Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm or by individual appointments.

Other Programs

ARIES also helps to fund Henry County Youth League, Sheriff’s Camp, law enforcement services and treatment services.

Coalition Information

ARIES meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. in ICAP’s West Conference Room.

Tobacco Free Henry County Coalition meets the 4th Tuesday of every even month from 12:15-1:00 at the New Castle-Henry County Public Library Meeting Room A. Members are encouraged to bring their lunch.
